FULLEE LOVE COLLECTIVE
Overcoming preconceived notions can be a real challenge, especially for an artist like Zaakir Muhammad. Known by many as Soup of famed underground Hip-Hop collective, Jurassic 5, the West Coast artist has worked painstakingly these past few years to move beyond his past and showcase a new sound to the world. And he’s doing exactly that as Fullee Love, while embodying the spirit and soul of the ‘70s and ‘80s with a fresh sound, unique voice, and important point of view on his sophomore album, Free, White & 21.
“In order to make this move to a new sound, I needed an unused vehicle, and Fullee Love is a name I’ve known for years,” he says. “It’s cool, humorous, and shapeless at this point. It has freedom written all over it and that’s what’s needed.”
That freedom can be felt throughout the album’s 17 tracks that follow the theme of being “Free, White & 21,” a saying that was popularized by Hollywood in the 1940s. At that time, white women (mostly) used the phrase to announce their independence, which Love is doing on here in multiple ways. In addition to throwing a middle finger at white privilege, he is exploring a Funk-fueled sound that’s driven in part by the project’s sole producer, Nicholas Eaholtz (a/k/a Nick Green of The Internet).
The Primary Steps on a Journey to the Fullee Love Collective Sound.
This particular chapter starts at the arrival at Readipop Studios, Reading, U.K. where I first meet up with Soup, Ant and the rest of the Collective, soon to be introduced. The atmosphere was buzzing yet chilled and relaxed, everything was in order and there was an air of excited confidence and that confidence continued to be prevalent throughout the day's recording and also the evening's performance.
Very rarely have I witnessed a recording session or sound check and gig without some degree of pfaffing, stress, technical hick-ups or general disorganisation. They knew what they were there to do, knew what sound they were after and just did it, seamlessly smooth and boy was it good.
I could harp on about Rhythm and Melody, Ant's thumping Bass Slaps, the beautifully angelic voice of Sabrina, Patrick's slick rifts, the cheeky little quirks from Harry on the Keys, Rob's sexy sax and keeping it all together Marcus on sticks, but I won't. I could also regale you with words of admiration for front man Soup, the guy with the silky-smooth vocals, mesmerizingly hypnotic but I won't. You'll be able to listen to this ear-candy soon enough, just keep in touch with The Fullee Love Collective Facebook page/ website for regular news and updates, links and pics.
This is a serious musical collaboration that's going to make a big sound and the waves will be felt across the globe.
